True wild rice is hand harvested from the lakes in Minnesota, and while it is more expensive than cultivated, the flavor is TOTALLY different (and better in my opinion). The difference between the two is noticeable, and ever since I tried true wild rice at the Minneapolis Farmers Market and chatted with the local harvester about the difference, I refuse to go back to the hard, black rice you usually find in the grocery store. I highly, highly, HIGHLY recommend using “true” wild rice rather than “cultivated” wild rice. I’ve included instructions for both below! (Not So) Pro Tips You know that I love recipes you can set and forget, and this is definitely one of those, regardless of how you decide to make it. I also love that this recipe can easily be made in the Instant Pot or slow cooker. The availability of so many different dairy-free milk options definitely helped, but Colin told me this version is better than his mama’s so I’m taking some credit here too! There are other, in-game overlays, that show the FPS + CPU/GPU/RAM usage + CPU/GPU thermals all in one and in bigger format, so you don’t need to show two screens. Steam FPS counter is nice and all but if you add two screens next to each other, it shrinks it way down. I will look into AMD FRTC and the others, however I am fine playing at 30fps, which would be optimal for my difficult setup. It is a possible workaround to try and cap the fps outside of the game, I have not done so as some games do not give me this issue, I need to adjust on a per game basis because of my specific choice of CPU. The lower ambient temperature was referring to the winter, the room was colder at that point, I am aware that the ambient temperature of the room will always be lower than my computer. If you are a foreigner and have experience attending Japanese college, I would love to hear your story! But I took so many interesting classes and learned a lot. Some professors were really hard because the university that I graduated from had many world-renowned scientists, medical doctors and professors. If I give some advice to any Japanese students interested in attending college in America, I would say “You will be studying…a lot!” It was never easy but I am glad that I chose this route. I went to an academic high school that focused on preparing students for Japanese university entrance examinations, so I knew that I would be working my butt off if I decide to go to American college. Thus, American universities are generally much more rigorous than Japanese universities. I don’t want you to think that American students don’t party in college because they do! In general, one of the biggest differences I found between the American and Japanese education systems is that students in America are expected to actively participate in their own learning. It sounded like they were having a blast meeting new people, finding baito (part-time jobs) and going to go-kon (group dating) when I was having a mini nervous breakdown preparing for my next presentation! Summary: I secretly envied my sisters in Japan talk about their college life. So it is understandable why many Japanese students want to focus on having fun rather than actually studying. Japanese college perpetuates the lecture-style text-bound curriculum that doesn’t encourage students to actively participate in their own learning. University students in Japan often skip their classes to party and have their classmates sign the attendance sheet but instructors in America would not tolerate their students faking their attendance. ![]() Some Japanese students whom I met didn’t graduate because they didn’t understand what it took for them to graduate from a college in America. This is the opposite of many American universities where the entrance is easy but graduation is difficult. Once they get into their dream college, things become more relaxed as they are almost guaranteed to graduate. Japanese students study very hard in high school, so they can pass the entrance exams to get into a reputable national or private university. So I couldn’t afford to remain silent just because I was shy. Sometimes the presentations took up nearly 25% of the total grade. I wanted to remain silent but had to force myself to speak up because actively participating in the discussion section and doing a group presentations or a solo presentations were part of the grading. Again, I was so used to just sitting in class quietly that it was really hard for me to speak up and join in on group discussions. The American curriculum emphasizes the importance of group discussion and presentation. I was very surprised that American students would just raise hands and ask questions during the class. If we had any questions, we would just see our teacher after class and we had to make sure the question was important enough for the teacher to answer. I went to a very competitive high school in Japan and the teachers would randomly ask questions to make sure that we were paying attention. I was used to copying whatever my teacher wrote on the board and then anxiously waiting for my teacher to ask me a question. Japanese teachers expect students to stay quiet while they teach and write on the blackboard. They actually like that because it shows that you are interested in learning the subject. I was surprised to find out that it is ok to raise your hand and interrupt your teacher to ask a question. ![]() Here are three differences that I found challenging. There were many differences between the U.S. All of which was new to the Japanese students in the program. They wanted us to ask questions during the class, discuss our opinions with our classmates and give oral presentations in front of the class. My American ESL (English as Second Language) teachers really encouraged the students (the majority was Japanese!) to actively participate in the class. It wasn’t a degree program so the overall atmosphere of the program was much more relaxed but even in this program, I noticed the differences between American and Japanese educational styles. So I signed up for a five-week intensive English program at the California State University. Even though I was able to read and write English, I was nowhere near the level necessary for me to succeed in college level classes. I was born and raised in Japan but moved to California to attend college. ![]() ![]() ![]() I’m also doing talks this year! ![]() ![]() (If you really want a fright, iCloud shows 6,261 unread items!) Advertisement ![]() Before long this all built up at the time of writing, my personal Gmail account tells me it has 2,661 unread messages. Automatically bundling emails into groups-Promos, Updates, and so on-kept them out of my way, so in addition to never being read they never got deleted. This does some things well but, like all webmail interfaces (to me at least), isn't nearly as conducive to a good bit of spring cleaning as an actual desktop application. Now, like my personal accounts, I was accessing it via Inbox. At first, it was just with my personal email accounts, but the trend accelerated in early 2017 when Ars migrated from Exchange to Gmail. Another factor was probably the nature of my job as anyone who sits through several hours of meetings a day surely knows, staying on top of one's email becomes a welcome diversion during the many boring bits.īut in the last few years, that all changed, and the real reason was webmail. Some of this might have been brought on by the fact that, by default, we were only given a meagre 250MB storage on the server learning how to make local archives and backups became a necessity, and in the process you learned to separate the wheat from the chaff. We used Exchange in my day job, and I was all about categorizing emails, sorting them into folders, and ruthlessly deleting unwanted messages each day. ![]() Jonathan Gitlinīack when I had an office job and writing for Ars was a side gig, I was all about inbox zero. And rather than just argue with each other on Slack, we decided to collate our thoughts about the whole "inbox zero" idea and how, for those who adhere to it, that happens. The two camps, and the mindsets behind them, have been a frequent topic of conversation here in the Ars Orbiting HQ. For others, it's a manifestation of an obsessively compulsive mind. Getty Images / Aurich Lawson reader comments 185 withĪre you the sort of person who needs to read and file every email they get? Or do you delight in seeing an email client icon proudly warning of hundreds or even thousands of unread items? For some, keeping one's email inbox with no unread items is more than just a good idea: it's a way of life, indicating control over the 21st century and its notion of productivity. ![]() ![]() Right after I saw the 2 kilos I told the suspect that the cash was in my car and I was going to go and retrieve it. The small time dealer thought he recognized me and even knew my true name, my personal vehicle and my wife's name. I drove the CI to the address but we were met by a brother of the guy I was supposed to meet. I wasn't aware that my partner lost sight of me within five minutes or that the body wire wasn't transmitting. My cover team consisted of one person following us to another town. I remember the first time a CI took me to buy some crank (methamphetamine powder). It is best to have the UC make the buys or the CI will have to testify in open court. CIs will either purchase drugs or guns for you or they will introduce an undercover (UC) officer/agent to the drug or firearms dealer. That meant wearing clothes and a hair style that was more contemporary. I needed self-confidence for the role of an undercover cop (UC). I had to change my perception in order to blend in and work undercover. I was used to walking into a room and when people looked at me they knew I was a cop, whether on-duty or off-duty. My arrest stats looked good and I was an aggressive pursuer of the suppliers in the drug and violence trade. I was picked because I arrested hundreds of dope fiends and PCP users. I had never used any drugs as a civilian or when I was in school. I identified with cops and the style of clothing they wore both on-duty and off-duty.
